Scott Othoson Memorial Scholarship

Scott Othoson came to Women In Need in 2002 and immediately became a steadfast member of our band of friends. Scott played a critical role in every aspect of the organization, serving as our Treasurer in 2003, then as a board member for 9 years.

When Scott passed away in 2012, he left us a vision. His dream was to help educate the community so that they may be self sufficient through their own means.

As part of Scott’s dreams, and in honor of his legacy, WIN created the Scott Othoson Memorial Scholarship.

Why a Scholarship?

It’s difficult for a single head of household to get ahead and become self-sufficient:

  • Day care subsidies from Social Services maximize paperwork and bureacracy
  • Subsidies are limited and difficult to get
  • Sometimes it’s hard to know if the effort is even worth the return

What’s needed is the means to become self-sufficient through training and education. The Othoson Memorial Scholarship can be the answer.

How does it work?

Designed for single heads of households, the Othoson Memorial Scholarship can provide up to $5,000 to recipients. What can the money be used for?

  • Tuition for education and training toward a specific certification
  • Child care needed during class time, if it is not covered by other sources

What are the requirements?

Applicants must be Kent County residents and meet the following requirements:

  • Be between the ages of 25 to 40 years old
  • Currently working a minimum of 20 hours per week
  • Willing to take 15 to 20 hours of classes per week
  • Have a highschool diploma or GED
  • Pass the Accuplacer Placement Test at whichever school they choose to attend

Scholarships are provided for certification courses, and must be completed within 24 months.
